If I am not connected to the internet, Firefox 4.0.1 opens the file as expected. But if i am connected, Firefox 4.0.1 not only opens the file, but also generates mysterious internet traffic. What is going on? All plugins are disabled.

Earlier versions of Firefox (before 4) did not generate unexpected internet traffic.

All versions of Firefox by default will try to connect to the internet, for details see https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Firefox+makes+unrequested+connections
