When I launch both the 4.0 and 5.0 installer for Firefox on a Mac, volume mounts, but in installer dialog box, Firefox icon is crossed out (circle and diagonal slash in white on top of FF logo) as if to say, "Don't install."

I downloaded the 4.0 Firefox update in March 2011. Just got around to updating today. Launched installer and it mounted the volume just fine. But, there's an white ixnay symbol (circle with diagonal slash) over the Firefox icon, as if to say, "No!" So, I ejected that volume and downloaded the Firefox 5.0 update from the Mozilla website. Same thing happened when I launched that installer: mounted fine but with white ixnay over Firefox icon. I want to update Firefox. What do I do now?

Firefox 4 and later version aren't compatible with PPC Macs, 3.6.x is the last official version of Firefox from Mozilla that will work.

For older Macs that aren't supported in Firefox 4.0 & 5.0, try TenFourFox for PowerPC's running Mac 10.4.11 & 10.5.8 .

3.6.18 is available here:

the-edmeister, Thank you for your reply. Do you think there are security risks in continuing to use Firefox 3.6.18? cp

Not currently, 3.6.18 was just released, and there is a 3.6.19 version slated to be released before support for 3.6.x ends this fall.

You really should consider TenFourFox, though. It is an example of what Mozilla is all about, anyone can use the Firefox source code and create their own browser for the hardware they are using or with the features they think are right for their "customer base". The only rules are that they come up with their own name and "branding" (logos and such).

Other examples of "community builds" currently available are K-Meleon, CometBird & Palemoon.

ed-meister: Thanks again for your reply. I've downloaded TenFourSix and will give it a try. Appreciate all your info and suggestions. cp
