Firefox crashes, yet still shows up as a process. I need to close firefox, open up task manager, end firefox.exe process, and then after that I can go back into firefox. How can I make this stop?

After a period of use or stagnancy, I will click to go to a new page in firefox, however it will get stuck on "connecting". To get firefox to start working again I need to close the current firefox window, go into task manager, end the firefox.exe that is still up after I close the window, and only then can I get firefox going again. How can I fix this?
