Sounds like they might have accidentally been removed from the toolbar. The toolbar can be customized pretty extensively, so it's not an uncommon mistake. Take a look at the Knowledge Base article Navigation buttons like back, home, bookmarks and reload are missing. It will show you how to restore the buttons.
