How do you stop the cursor defaulting to the browser's address bar rather than the search engines search box

When a new tab opens, and I use google.com for my opening webpage, the cursor defaults to the address bar instead of the google search box. I know that the address bar works similarly, but I would prefer to use the google search box. Any thoughts on fixing this issue?

That issue can be caused by an extension that isn't working properly.

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
