FF v10.0.2 and TBIRD v10.0.2 display odd characters as the last symbol on some menu items. it is a thick vertical bar, like a BOLD I (san serif, like Arial).

u r awesome. i don't know how it happened but Control Panel -> Display -> Appearance -> Advanced /Menu was set to MS Sans Serif! i changed it to Tahoma and viola', it's fine. strange that this didn't affect any other programs context menus - maybe mozilla puts a hidden 'ellipsis' after some of the menu items? thanks again

Yes, menu items that open additional dialog windows have an ellipsis appended to indicate that.
The MS Sans Serif! font doesn't have a glyph to show the ellipsis, so you may see a vertical bar (|) or another character instead.
