When I open a file without identifying where to save it (eg- excel sheet), where does it get saved while the app (eg Excel) is launched? I'm using FF 11, w Win 7

So did you save the file, then double-click it in the download manager window? By default, Firefox saves files to "Downloads" under your user folder. Or do you mean something else?

In such a case the file gets stored in the OS temp folder (%temp%), possibly as read-only.
If you modify such a file in another application then make sure to use Save as to save the file under a different name to avoid dataloss.
