Some pages, especially news sites, will go back to the previous page after 30 seconds

First off, needing a number in my password for a forum is lame lame lame lame lame lame lame. Stop perpetuating the washing out of security; I am liable for my own security, thank you.

When I load pages through a link, especially from a Google Search and especially if those sites are a news site, the page will stay open for 30 seconds, then will automatically go back 1 page. If I click a few links, it will go back on page every 30 seconds until it reaches the first page.

It is exactly 30 seconds before the action happens. I have no plugins and am usign a default installation of Firefox 12

Has Firefox ever worked normally for you or has this always happened?

Does the backwards navigation work after you go back to a page on a different site, or does it then stop? For example, if you click from Google to site 1, click another page on site 1, then click to site 2 and another page on site 2, and then click to site 3 and wait, how far back will you get?

Does it make any difference if you clear the following checkbox:

orange Firefox button or classic Tools menu > Options > Advanced > General

"Warn me when websites try to redirect or reload the page"

Weird... Unchecking it seems to fix the problem... I'm guessing its a bug that's already been reported.

Hmmm. That fixed it for news sites, but not non-news sites.

This only happens from search results. If I just type a URL in to the address bar, no problem. If I click a link in a search, then click a link in that site, then wait, it will be back to the search page after 60 seconds.

This has always happened with this computer, but it is a work computer and I just started using it in May.

Does it make any difference if you click to the new page then immediately open a new tab and make that tab active? Similarly, does it make any difference if you click to the new page then immediately make another application active?

If it only affects the active tab, it could be something external sending a Backspace key to the page or some incompatibility with more advanced mouse/trackball drivers that support a "back" button.

I figured that may be the issue, but no luck. Even with the window minimized and the focus on another program, I can see the pages moving backwards on the taskbar.

The most common denominator here is that the chain starts with click a Google Search result, and end back at that search results page.

I wonder whether any of your add-ons could be causing this? A standard diagnostic for that is to try Firefox's Safe Mode.

First, I recommend backing up your Firefox settings in case something goes wrong. See Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles. (You can copy your entire Firefox profile folder somewhere outside of the Mozilla folder.)

Next, restart Firefox in Firefox's Safe Mode (Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode) using

Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

In the Safe Mode dialog, do not check any boxes, just click "Continue in Safe Mode."

If you aren't dragged back to Google in Safe Mode, this would implicates one of your add-ons or custom settings.

It appears to be happening regardless of Safe Mode, unfortunately.

Do you have any mischievous co-workers who might have... I don't know, it's very odd.

No its been acting this way since I started using this computer. It seems to happen in Internet Explorer as well, so maybe this machine is just botched...

Can you find any add-ons in common between Firefox and IE? In Firefox, the shared ones would more likely be listed in Plugins than in Extensions.
