the only entry in about:config is browser.history_expire_days.mirror, which is currently 3650. i do not see an entry for browser.history_expire_days_max or min.

options->privacy->history is set to "remember history", it will not accept attempt to change to "use custom settings" and there is no option for setting the duration of history to be saved.

The browser.history_expire_days prefs are no longer supported in Firefox 4+ versions, so you can reset the browser.history_expire_days.mirror pref to remove it on a next start.

Firefox 4+ versions do not have a time limit for the history.
Firefox determines automatically how many pages can be kept without affecting the performance.
You can see the current value via the read-only pref places.history.expiration.transient_max_pages on the about:config page.

See Marco Bonardo's blog about this:

If you do not keep older history then make sure that you aren't running cleanup software on a scheduled base to remove history.
Also make sure that you aren't using Clear Recent History to clear the browsing history.
