when I click on an article FF "closes" while it loads. I get my desktop with the FF icon in the status bar, when the page is loaded FF goes full screen again.

Are the pages you are loading forcing Firefox to use full-screen mode? You can prevent that by changing a setting in about:config. full-screen-api.enabled - set to false That will prevent any page from being able to switch Firefox into full-screen mode.
