If I click on the history button in my navigation toolbar, a history panel opens up but there is no history inside it. However, I can see my history through the menu bar. Any ideas why history only displays one way and not the other? I haven't added any extensions lately.

Hello,

Many site issues can be caused by corrupt cookies or cache. In order to try to fix these problems, the first step is to clear both cookies and the cache. Note: This will temporarily log you out of all sites you're logged in to. To clear cache and cookies do the following:

  1. Go to Firefox > History > Clear recent history or (if no Firefox button is shown) go to Tools > Clear recent history.
  2. Under "Time range to clear", select "Everything".
  3. Now, click the arrow next to Details to toggle the Details list active.
  4. From the details list, check Cache and Cookies and uncheck everything else.
  5. Now click the Clear now button.

Further information can be found in the Clear your cache, history and other personal information in Firefox article.

Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!

Thank you.

Thanks for the response but that is not the problem. I have cleared cache and cookies many times since this problem first appeared. Also, to re-iterate, the history does appear in the menu toolbar, just not in the history panel that opens up when you click on the history button.

Thank you for your advice cor-el. I tried using the "Places Maintenance" extension (mentioned in your first link) to check/repair my places.sqlite. Can you point me to any documentation for this extension? I'm not sure what some of those operations do... I tried a couple of harmless ones that performed scans - they didn't identify any problems. I am afraid about using the other tools in the extension without knowing what they will do. e.g. Will any of them delete my profile or its contents? I have a backup, but I'd rather not have to use it.

If the bookmarks are OK and do not have a problem then the extension might not work and you may have to delete the places.sqlite file to make Firefox create a new file.
Firefox should use the most recent JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder to restore (import) the bookmarks in that case.
