Toggling the TABS on top switch no longer works - V29

My Firefox got updated today, and it changed my settings (about:config) to put the tabs on top, instead of where they belong, on bottom. I toggled it from TRUE to FALSE, exited the broweser, and came back in. Tabs still on top. Tried it several times; tabs still on top.

How can I get the tabs back to the bottom where they belong (IMHO)? It is difficult to use the browser now, my workflow time is increasing because I have to look elsewhere for things, instead of them being where they are supposed to be. I though FIREFOX was going to continue being confirguable...? Is that changing?

BTW, everytime I posted this on FaceBook, someone at Mozilla deleted the posts. not cool.

The feature to place the tabs at the buttom of the Awesome bar has been removed in Firefox 29.0. Since 29.0 still is in beta, I would recommend you to "downgrade" to 28.0 which still allows you to change the position of your tabs.

Hello tommc4, if you choose cor-el's advice (to install the Classic Theme Restorer extension) then see : Restore tabs on bottom and other options

thank you

As for the advise "You can install the Classic Theme Restorer extension to restore some functionality that was lost" I don't see that installing an add-on and teaching myself how to configure it is a solution when the "solution" already there "about:config" ought to still be working!

I have this problem too. I posted a question to mozilla this morning. I do remember a similar bug in another update, just can't remember witch one. Was fixed doing a total reset in my browser which is a pain in the ***. Hope I don't have to do that again.

Cor-el's advice above is correct. The Classic Theme Restorer add-on is easy to install and handles tabs on top or bottom, as well as other classic FF options you may be interested in.

As George Kearse says :

"I don't see that installing an add-on and teaching myself how to configure it is a solution when the "solution" already there "about:config" ought to still be working! "

Why don't you instead get about:config working properly!!!

It used to work... This option actually needs to be in the VIEW menu, which this latest version of Firefox seems to have forgotten exists...

I dread installing upgrades to FF anymore. The most basic features are broken and now we're being told to get an add-on because about:config doesn't work? Please tell me how that makes sense?? And I absolutely agree that Tabs on Top should be in the VIEW menu! And btw, I noticed that when I got on the support site this morning to see if anyone else had reported this problem, it was marked as SOLVED. It is NOT solved if about:config does not work!

The more Firefox changes, the less I like it.

The code in Firefox that has to do with tabs on bottom (browser.tabs.onTop) has been removed and won't come back.

It is really easy to use code in userChrome.css to move the tab bar down without using an extension (all extensions use that same way with -moz-box-ordinal-group).

  • Create the chrome folder (lowercase) in the <xxxxxxxx>.default profile folder if this folder doesn't exist
  • Use a plain text editor like Notepad to create a (new) userChrome.css file in this folder (the names are case sensitive)
  • Paste the code in the userChrome.css file in the editor window and make sure that the userChrome.css file starts with the default @namespace line
  • Make sure that you select "All files" and not "Text files" when you save the file via "Save file as" in the text editor as userChrome.css. Otherwise Windows may add a hidden .txt file extension and you end up with a not working userChrome.css.txt file

Add code to the userChrome.css file below the default @namespace line.

@namespace url("http://www.mozilla.org/keymaster/gatekeeper/there.is.only.xul"); /* only needed once */

#TabsToolbar{-moz-box-ordinal-group:10000!important}

The customization files userChrome.css (user interface) and userContent.css (websites) are located in the chrome folder in the Firefox profile folder.

You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:

  • Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)
