The popup, Open Software Updater, keeps coming in and wants me to download it to keep firefox up to date. Is open software updater a valid firefox updater?

hello logdenfarm, updates are handled automatically & internally by firefox (you can always trigger a check for updates manually in the firefox menu New Fx Menu > help Help-29 > about firefox).

so there is no need for external updaters, which might in some cases also bundle unnecessary or malicious software - i'm not familiar with the program you have mentioned specifically, but if you receive poups form an unclear source you should probably run a full scan of your system with different security tools like the free version of malwarebytes and adwcleaner.
