How do I resync my passwords and set a new master when the options>sync and options>security don't want to allow either?

PC#1: Passwords vanished & a new master not allowed under options>security menu ("Password Change Failed">"Unable to Change Master Password"). The Options>sync window just hangs up on "Determining Account Status...." so I try about:home but the Firefox sync setup popup menu window to pair device via about:home's three-bar codes is not working either. Although MAC#2 connects the [NEXT] button is grayed out on PC#1's Firefox Sync Setup popup menu window (called Pair a Device) and the far left bottom button on that same window is totally blank (that button, when selected, leads to the Sync Options with fields for Device Name and merging data. Then, when I name my device and selected "Recommended: Merge this device...." and select [DONE] to return to the Pair a Device window the [BACK] and [NEXT] buttons now say, "undefined" with the former [NEXT] button remaining gray. Hope that made sense! Thanks for your help I love Firefox and really hope I can keep using it.

  • New Sync in the Firefox 29+ versions of Firefox doesn't allow for using a Master Password for Sync.
  • "Pair a Device" and "Merge" are features of the older version of Sync, not the current Sync version.

Firefox 32 and later builds store the passwords in the logins.json file in the profile folder and no longer use the signons.sqlite file. You can try to force Firefox to reimport the passwords from the signons.sqlite file.

  • reset the signon.importedFromSqlite pref on the about:config page to the default value via the right-click context menu
  • delete the logins.json file in the Firefox profile folder with Firefox closed

When you restart Firefox then you should have the signon.importedFromSqlite pref with the value set to true and you should have the passwords imported in the Password Manager unless there may have been errors.

If there are problems with the MP then there could be a problem with the key3.db file or there is a mismatch between the signons.sqlite and key3.db files.
