why does the upgrade to 33.1.1 require a reboot on Windows 7?

this is a point upgrade from 33.1 and firefox refuses to start until I reboot the machine. I can't just reboot anytime I want. there doesn't seem to be any consistency in when or why these upgrades require a reboot and it's frustrating.

hello anixter, this is strange - in my experience no firefox update ever required a restart of my windows 7 machine. maybe this is something that can be addressed by a clean reinstall:

  1. download the full firefox installer from https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/
  2. uninstall firefox from the windows control panel (this won't affect your custom settings like bookmarks, passwords, extensions that are stored in your profile)
  3. afterwards go to the firefox program folder, which is usually located at C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox, and delete it manually if there are any remains in it.
  4. finally reinstall the browser with the setup file you have downloaded initially...

In the process of uninstalling Firefox, found the remains of a much older Firefox installation. This could have been causing a conflict. --Thanks
