Using the Open Menu button on the tool bar and Character Encoding button therein, I select Western to eliminate the annoying Chinese characters that have recently started appearing on the tabs of the browser. But the encoding switches to Unicode as soon as I start to use the browser.

That issue isn't caused by a wrong encoding, but is caused by an extension.

The McAfee SiteAdvisor extension has been reported to cause issues with text Chinese (CJK) characters appearing on tabs, so you can disable this extension until McAfee releases an update to address this issue.

The problem was solved by disabling the McAfee SiteAdvisor. My Adobe Flash player has been v16.0.0.296. It did not appear to have anything to do with the nusance Chinese characters on the tabs of my Mozilla/Foxfire tabs. Thanks!
