Since about a month ago all messages I delete don't appear in the Deleted items folder. The settings are for all deleted items to be moved to the folder. Account settings > server settings > moved to folder .... I select the folder to move it and click OK. When I check on this it seems to have reset to 'Choose folder' again. I have deleted items from the Deleted items folder to reduce the folder size, I have also tried to make the folder synchronize locally for offline use, and have tried to use the repair facility. Nothing works.

'Deleted Items' is not a default Thunderbird folder.

So, did you manually create this 'deleted Items' folder?

Are you using IMAP mail account? Is it gmail, yahoo etc ?

Have you subscribed to see the 'Deleted Items' folder - please check this?

I did not create the folder. I am using a university account (ucl). How do I subscribe to see the folder?
