You can set browser.sessionstore.restore_pinned_tabs_on_demand to true on the about:config page.

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I'll be careful" to continue.

I'm not aware of an extension that includes this setting, but maybe Tab Mix Plus includes it in its many options, but installing TMP only for this setting would be overkill.

It is not that difficult to change this setting.

Did you try to open the about:config page via the location/address bar?

Type about:config in the location (address) bar and press the Enter key to open the about:config page like you open a website by typing the URL in the location bar.

  • if you see a warning message then you can confirm that you want to access the about:config page.

You can use the Search bar at the top of the about:config page to locate preferences more easily, so start typing 'pinned' without the quotes until you see the browser.sessionstore.restore_pinned_tabs_on_demand line.

You can double-click this line to toggle the value from false to true. This will make the status column change to "user set" and the line changes to bold to indicate that the pref no longer has the default setting.

You can look at this MozillaZine knowledge base article for a screenshot of this page.
