Why have all my icons been replaced by tiny vertical boxes.

This weirdness happens with, for example, Yahoo and Tumblr websites. If I use Safari, the icons appear as usual/normal, so I assume it's a browser problem. I don't know how to send you a sample image of the tiny boxes that have replaced the icons.

Hi jakeallsop,

I understand that icons have been replaced with vertical boxes. If this is happening in the the websites only please first clear the cache and cookies:

Second I would check if this setting is checked:

  1. Right click on the page and select "Page Info"
  2. In the box that opens up click on the "Media" tab and make sure that "[ ]block images from "www.....com" is not checked.

These are the tall boxes with two rows of two characters each?

The most common reason for this problem is if you set Firefox to use a standard set of fonts instead of letting websites choose their own fonts. You can review/modify that setting here:

"3-bar" menu button (or Firefox menu) > Preferences > Content

Click the "Advanced" button, then make sure there is a checkbox for "Allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of my selections above"

OK that and reload the page (Cmd+r) to see whether it loads the custom font.

Back to normal?

If not, font downloading might be disabled. Please check this setting:

(A) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Return/Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.

(B) In the search box above the list, type or paste gfx and pause while the list is filtered

(C) If the gfx.downloadable_fonts.enabled is bolded and "user set" to false, double-click it to switch it back to true

You can reload the page and see whether that helps. Success?
