How can I initiate auto update/download pragmatically?

Detail:

In other words, Firefox seems to download updates when I go to menu: Help > About It then, download the updates and prompts the button to 'Restart Firefox to Update'.

Is there a way to download or initiate the download pragmatically, and just restart the browser, so it's updated to the latest version.

The goal here is to keep Firefox up to date remotely. Instead of updating Firefox using installer, we can take advantage of Auto Update and keep Firefox update.

why not use Firefox's auto-updater? If you allow Firefox to update itself automatically it will download and install all updates within a day or two of release (unless they get pulled, like they currently are for windows due to a startup crash).

How exactly does it work?

This is the test I've done, and it does not seem like its auto updating itself. I have to manually go to 'About' link to initiate the downloads.

I installed an older version 38.x on the machine and enabled auto update. Left if for a day and restarted the FF, but it wasn't update to the latest version which is 40.x something.

The reason you didn't get the update automatically is because the release is currently throttled, which means they only way the Firefox will update is if you go into about Firefox. In a few days we will unthrottle the update and then every Firefox that isn't updated will update automatically.

Just to make it clear, when the update is unthrottled, it will update it automatically, and all we have to do is restart Firefox to update?

How long do you think it usually takes?

Within 24 hours of the update being unthrottled, Firefox will update (so long as you have updates enabled and the Mozilla Maintenance service installed) and a restart will apply said update. Firefox does have to be open to download the update however.
