Hello there --

Firefox recently started behaving very poorly and crashing on me nearly constantly. It seems to *very much* not to like new tabs, and I can work on it for some short time with only one window or starting a single window, but it eventually goes haywire and crashes just the same even in a single tab. I've tried all the basics to fix it (a clean reinstallation, restarting it in Safe Mode, where the problem persists, refreshing the program, etc.), and none of them seem to really help it.

I will note I did have a problem last night that *might* be related to this--Firefox ended up infected with the "DNS Unlocker" spamware, which I eliminated with Malware Byes Antimalware and erasing the history settings on Firefox. After that, Firefox lost all of its stability and has not come back to me. No idea what is causing it at this point, and all of the other browsers that I might use (this is on Microsoft Edge, though Internet Explorer was fine, too) shows no real problem.

They've all come in the past few hours. I'm surprised it has persisted despite the reinstallation from scratch. My ability to modify the program is *very* limited, too, given how easily it crashes and how the options and Add-Ons menus only pop-up in a new tab, which seems to completely destabilize the program, though just sitting on Google for some time does, too.

Thank you for the crash reports. There are multiple issues causing your crash to occur. Please try Firefox safe mode as outlined below to see if it helps.

Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that temporarily turns off hardware acceleration, resets some settings, and disables add-ons (extensions and themes).

If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:

  • Click the menu button New Fx Menu, click Help Help-29 and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled.

If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:

  • On Windows: Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
  • On Mac: Hold the option key while starting Firefox.
  • On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run firefox -safe-mode
    (you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)

When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, theme, or hardware acceleration. Please follow the steps in the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article to find the cause.

To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help others with the same problem.

Thank you for the idea and the help.

Unfortunately, no, however, starting it in safe mode (either by using the button to switch over or holding SHIFT upon start) does not seem to really help it. It might be momentarily more stable, but, overall, no.

Do a clean reinstall of the current Firefox release and delete the Firefox program folder before installing a fresh copy of the current Firefox release.

If possible uninstall your current Firefox version to cleanup the Windows registry and settings in security software.

  • Do NOT remove "personal data" when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because this will remove all profile folders and you lose personal data like bookmarks and passwords including data in profiles created by other Firefox versions.

Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.

  • (32 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\"
  • (64 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\"

Your personal data like bookmarks is stored in the Firefox profile folder, so you won't lose personal data when you uninstall and reinstall or update Firefox, but make sure NOT to remove personal data when you uninstall Firefox as that will remove all Firefox profile folders and you lose your personal data.

If you keep having problems then create a new profile to check if your current profile is causing the problem. See "Creating a profile":

If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over problems.
