Automatically recognize Unicode in incoming messages?

Some incoming Email messages contain gibberish. To make them readable requires view>text encoding>Unicode. It would be so much better if Thunderbird recognized certain character strings as indicators of Unicode and "shift gears" automatically.

Thunderbird uses the text encoding specified in the email.

Have a look in the message source and I think you will find it is either messing entirely or specifies one of the ancient ANSI code pages.
