Hello,

Im new to Thunderbird, please could you advise the following:

I am creating a new e-mail, in the recipient box I used to type in the beginning of the e-mail address and the rest of the address would automatically populate. For example I would type bondts@ and the programme would automatically show a list of options, in this case bondts@hotmail.com I would simply click on it to incorporate in the e-mail.

Currently part of the recipient address I have typed is shown in Red text?

Kindly advise how I do this.

Thank you.

Have a close look at your Contacts address book. I suspect the email addresses have landed in the "nickname" field.

You have to take care when importing contacts to ensure the data to be imported is aligned with the appropriate fields in Thunderbird's Address Book. I don't think this step is self-evident.

Have a look here: http://xenos-email-notes.simplesite.com/417788922 and in particular the section "From somewhere else to Thunderbird".

Many users would suggest that you re-arrange the columns in your CSV file in your spreadsheet program, but of course you need to know which columns you can use and their ordering.

Thunderbird should work as you have described.

But…

  1. You enter only one address per line. Or to put it another way, when you have entered an address, hit return to move to the next address box. It will grow new boxes as you keep doing this. More than one address on a line will cause it to show in red.
  2. You will need to import your addresses from whatever you were using previously. An address not in your address book will also be shown in red.

So there are two likely reasons for the red text. Note that red doesn't mean it is a bad address, just unknown as far as Thunderbird is concerned.

In the Write window, press F9 to display a summary of your Address Book. If your Address Book has anything in it, that information will show here and the "Add to…" buttons can be used to add addresses to the current message. (But like you, I prefer the typing method.)

Hello Zenos,

I have imported all my addresses into the Contacts section of the address book but when typing a recipient in a new e-mail the address cant be automatically found. I'm having to search for the address then manually put it in the e-mail.

Surely this cant be right?

Regards,

Steven.
