Firefox 57 on Windows 7 freezes when interacting with any toolbar button

When I click on any of the standard toolbar buttons, like the hamburger main menu button, the library button, Firefox sometimes freezes for a few seconds, other times it completely freezes and needs to be killed and restarted. In any case, the click response is never instant and normal.

I was having a similar issue with the previous Firefox (v56) when clicking on the developer menu item (I put it on my toolbar by customization), to reveal the Inspector, Web console etc options, but not as intense and annoying as with v57, and not with any toolbar button!

I am running the new Firefox 57 64-bit on Windows 7. I have already tried the following:

- Restarting with add-ons disabled

- Refreshing via the Troubleshooting page

- Disabling UI animations by setting toolkit.cosmeticAnimations.enabled to false

none of which worked.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hello,

turns out that if I right click on the firefox icon and "Run as Administrator", then it works with no problems! My computer is a member of a domain, and it runs Veriato 360, an employer monitoring/recording software. Not sure if this has anything to do with the problems mentioned though.

Hopefully this helps Mozilla find a proper solution!

Installed the 32-bit version, and the problem is still there. The response to clicks is a tiny bit faster, but still very slow and problematic.

Hi there!

Sorry to hear you're running into problems.

Do you have similar problems using other browsers or other types of programs on your computer?

Have you tried using an older version?

Just for clarity, I assume you're posting your questions using Linux - that's what the automatically submitted system information on this page shows. Is that OS (or computer) affected by the same issue?

Thank you for using Firefox!

Hi Vesper and thanks for your reply.

Chrome and IE work with no problems. Same with any other program on my computer which is pretty fast (i7, 8GB RAM, SSD).

I just downgraded to v56.0.2, x64, which works A LOT better, although not perfect; again, when clicking the menu button several times, some of them it takes a while for the menu dropdown to appear, which makes for a poor experience.

I've been posting from firefox on Linux Mint, on another machine. v57 is not available yet on my OS's repository, so I'm still on v56, which has no problems at all.

OK, thank you for the additional details, that's very helpful!

At the moment, I have no additional questions - or solutions, for that matter. You have tried to troubleshoot this quite thoroughly already, so I think the best we can do at this moment is escalate this to the developers and see what they come up with.

Right, thanks again.

Will you do the escalation part, or is there something I should do?

We are continuously gathering information about technical issues people face and forward them to developers - so, after a while, your issue will be collated with others (possibly similar ones) and reported via Bugzilla.

Alternatively, if you want to be involved directly with making Firefox work better and fixing the issue you're facing, you can file a bug on your own. You can see all the information regarding filing "good" bugs (ones that help developers identify the issue and fix it faster) here: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Mozilla/QA/Bug_writing_guidelines

Thank you for using Firefox!

Hey there!

Glad to hear you've found a solution that makes sense in this context - I hope your domain administrators can help you use Firefox (and other software) more efficiently in the future.
