My FX now opens in a new tab; how to get rid of tab and restore plain vanilla FX start page?
For some reason unknown to me, my Firefox now opens from a new tab, which shows all sorts of things I don't want, use or need--like "suggestions from pocket" "news stories" and other things. There is a options icon I can use to make the content go away, but no way I can find to get rid of the New Tab, or restore my plain vanilla FX start page with the globe & fox logo. This is damnably aggrivating! How do I fix this?
Running Windows 8.1

You can have whatever page you wish set as a Home page when Firefox starts. You can also have Firefox remember your tabs when you close it, so that when you re-open it they all come back again.
See this info on how to set your Home page:

I personally have Google Advanced Search set as my Home Page, as when I find it a very useful search utility when I need to be pretty specific in what I am looking for:
https://www.google.co.uk/advanced_search
But you can choose whatever you like. Hope that helps, Richard.
Edit: I just thought of something else. If you really do not like the New Tab page at all, you can use an Extension like "New Tab Homepage" to bring up your Homepage if you click the + to open a new tab:
Modified
You can toggle this pref on the about:config page.
- browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.aboutHome.enabled
You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I accept the risk!" to continue.
