Does the ESR auto-update between major versions?

I'm currently using the ESR 52 and I'm curious what will happen when 60.2 hits. The ESR FAQ states that "From a major version to the other (example: the 45 to 52 migration), the updates will be proposed only after the X.2.0 version is released".

I'm simply trying to get a clearer picture of what that will look like to an end user. Will the 52.X versions provide any sort of notice to the user that there is a new version? When would that happen? At 60.0 release? Or at 60.2 release? Will it simply auto-update in the background? Will I have to disable automatic updates prior to the release?

I rely on an NPAPI plugin and while we have a backup plan there's nothing that currently fully replaces the functionality we need and would prefer not to simply lose that functionality overnight.

I appreciate the help!

This should help you https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/organizations/ Yes it will offer you to update to the next version.

Thanks for the quick response. I'm looking for a little more clarity, I quoted that page right at the start.

Basically, by "offer you to update to the next version", what does that mean? Is there a message upon the next launch? Does the update happen in the background? And when would it occur? At the initial 60.0 release, or at the 60.2?

Firefox 52.9.0esr will be the last for Fx 52 ESR in overlap so the next update will be to Fx 60.2.0esr as Fx 52 ESR will be EOL then.

Originally the next major version ESR was going to be on was Firefox 59.0 but it was moved to 60.0

My apologies, James brought some clarity to the question.
