Lately, Firefox has sometimes brought up a dialog box asking if I want to allow a website to "send notifications".

What does that mean?

And why is there no help or information about this in the dialog box? I've been using the web for 25 years and never heard of "sending notifications" so how is anyone supposed to know what it means?

Really confused.

Web Push notifications in Firefox is the article about this. Basically the site is asking if it can send you messages even when you aren't visiting the site (such as when new content is published for example).
