Thunderbird appears to have deleted my passwords so I have to reenter them to send and receive messages. How to fix this?

When I start Thunderbird now , it asks for my password, which I enter, and then Thunderbird downloads any messages. When I send a message, Thunderbird now asks for the outgoing password, which I enter, and then Thundebird sends the message. But now Thunderbird does not save the passwords. When I look at the list of saved passwords, only one is listed.

I shut down and restarted, but this did not solved the problem. Again Thunderbird asked for my password. This time I clicked on the box to save the password. I realized this is not the Master Password. Now the passwords are saved, so I expect the problem is solved, but I don't know why the passwords were deleted.
