What happens to compressed email files? Can I delete them from my hard drive? Where are they?

Every so often Thunderbird asks to compress Emails to conserve space. These are "deleted" Emails that I no longer want or need. So how do I completely wipe them from my hard drive once they have been compressed? Where are they on the C Drive after the compression process? Are they deleted automatically? I use only POP Email and only from my desktop machine.

I do not know about compress emails but you can learn about the Compact function of Thunderbird here. Hint... It has nothing to do with compressing or zipping files.
