Tab preferences only have the option to open links in new tabs or windows. No option to open links in the original tab.

Firefox has a setting to determine whether a link coded to open in a new window is diverted to a new tab instead. There is actually a way to force it to stay in the same tab, replacing the current page, but you have to dig for it.

Do you want to try the setting described in the solution in the following thread? Let us know if that does what you want.
