Could you try creating a new preference along the lines of this method for getting Firefox to recognize the magnet: protocol: https://medium.com/@alexadam/how-to-open-magnet-links-in-firefox-5db1e14716ac (change magnet to appstream).

This worked to start the application launcher, but I think what I need is just to download the content. What setting do I change to get it to open the download dialog?
