IIRC, in v60.x ESR the icon at top used to display bookmarks by default, and you could also look at history. Perhaps I'm remembering it wrong (It's the icon that looks like 3 books with the 4th leaning to the left.

In v68.8.0esr which is now installed it shows "Recent Highlights". I want to get the old behavior back. The following will remove the recent highlights (except the title "recent highlights"). But the bookmarks are not shown unless I click on Bookmarks.

#appMenu-library-recentHighlights { display: none !important; }

How do I get the old behavior back?

I know I can add an extra icon (display bookmarks menu), but I'd still need the other one to access history. Perhaps if there were a History icon and a bookmarks icon, that would do as I don't use sync, and there is already the downloads icon, and I don't need the Pocket List.

OK, I stand corrected. v60 is the same as v68. They are called recent highlights. I went back to v56.0.2... and that is what I was remembering. I much prefer the layout of that version to everything after v57 onward. Can't use it though because netflix and other sites won't work with it.

I will have to live with the two separate history and bookmark icons.

In v56 the bookmarks icon looks like the sidebars icon in v60+. There is no library icon in v56.

Right, you can add the History icon, just click ≡ -> Customize.

Yes, I saw that. Not what I was really after. I was trying to revert the behavior to earlier FF. I've got the two icons instead of one for now, I will continue to search for a way to get it back to one icon without the "recent highlights" and with book marks shown by default - how it used to be.

Change for the sake of change :(

You can set the display state via a DisplayBookmarksToolbar policy.

Thanks for that. I'm not looking to display the bookmarks toolbar. I'm trying to get the drop down on the library icon to behave the way it did in v60.x esr. I have hundreds of bookmarks, and I had them categorized, but still the list was too deep for my screen vertically, there is no chance it will fit horizontally.

You aren't referring to the main menu bar with File and Bookmarks and History ?

The only way to have a clear view of bookmarks and history is by using the sidebar (Ctrl+B and Ctrl+H)(there is a "Show sidebars" toolbar button available) and for the history only the sidebar and the History Manager is convenient.
The Bookmarks Menu toolbar button (star on a tray) should allow easy access to all bookmarks in a drop-down list.
If the list is vertically too long then maybe reorganize the bookmarks in some extra folders to lessen the need to scroll.
If lists are too wide then you can edit the names and make them smaller.

I don't think there is a difference between the Library toolbar button in Firefox 60 esr and Firefox 68 esr unless you were using code in userChrome.css that stopped working.

I seem to recall (and correct me if I'm wrong), the library icon in v60 showed Bookmarks, History, and may have also included downloads and others. But no "recent highlights". by default, where recent highlights are in v68 it used to show the bookmarks.

That is what I am trying to revert to.

I have categorized by 478 bookmarks into 41 categories. I guess I could further de-fragment them, but that's not this issue I'm trying to address. I'm trying to get the library drop down to look like it did in v60.

My test PC is being used by someone else at present so I don't have a free PC on which to install the old version to grab a pic.

The book marks icon and history icon do indeed give me easy access to bookmarks and history - with two icons. I use my book marks far more than history, and I've never needed the sidebar. In fact, I've removed the sidebar icon. I used to be able to do this with one library icon. I really need to install the old version to show what it looks like.

There is an image attached to an earlier post in this thread. I'm talking about the top right corner.

This pref on the about:config page controls whether to show or hide the Recent Highlights in the Library toolbar button drop down menu.

  • browser.library.activity-stream.enabled = false

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I accept the risk!" to continue.

Yes, I had seen that. It turns off everything below the synced tabs. Not how it was in v60.

I'll image my PC later today and blow away my FF install, reinstall the older version and see if I'm hallucinating or whether it is how I remember it. Will let you know.

Only that star on a tray button would display the bookmarks directly.
Via the Library toolbar button you have only access to some recent lists and you only have a link to open the Library (bookmarks and history manager) to access all items.

browser.library.activity-stream.enabled works the same for me in 60 esr and in 68 esr.

That may be true. That config option was not one I ever used. My Library drop down was pretty much stock. I don't recall making any changes in v60 to make it look different. Anyway, as I said, I'll reinstall v60 later and see what I see.
