Firefox is stuck and won't respond

Firefox refuses to open on my Mac even though the icon on the dock has a black dot indicating it is open. I click on it and nothing happens. The firefox name does not appear in the toolbar at the top of the screen. When I go into finder and applications and click on firefox there, nothing happens. When I tried to open an older version of firefox, I get an error message telling me another version of firefox is already running. Can anyone figure this out? I would like either to get it to respond or to delete it and start over. My Mac is version 10.15.6

If you "Tab" to it and release both the Tab and Command keys, in theory, Firefox should be made the active application.

Does anything appear to happen on the screen?

If not, is there any possibility that Firefox is open on a different display? Obviously only applicable if you use (or have used) multiple displays.

Does Firefox appear in the App Switcher? If you hold down the Command key and then press and release the Tab key, MacOS should display a bar of running programs that you can switch to by pressing Tab additional times. Is Firefox listed?
