"Delete cookies and site data when firefox is closed" setting not remembered - I have this ticked but when I restart Firefox, it is UNticked. I created a new clean profile, and the same thing happens with that. This started I think once I updated to version 102.0 64bit recently, and seems to have broken Twitter login - each time I have to go to settings, and clear history - after doing some experiments as to what bit of History needed clearing, it was the setting "offline site data" that was the critical one. Why won't Firefox, even in a brand new profile with no addons, REMEMBER that I have ticked ""Delete cookies and site data when firefox is closed" setting not remembered"? Firefox desktop, 102.0 64 bit, Windows 7. Thank you.

Wow - it certainly IS complicated. I actually WANT these boxes to stay ticked and DO what the interface SAYS it does. I would never have noticed the change except that it was breaking my Twitter login, so that EVERY time I start Firefox I have to manually delete history (in particular, website offline data) or else the Twitter login page simply won't load properly so I can't login. I definitely don't trust Twitter not to track me, particularly when I am on other sites with Twitter links, so I want to make sure Twitter site data/cookies are removed without fail after I close a Twitter tab. Looks like I may have to simply wait for the next update. I am not impressed with this update - Mozilla need to fix this and admit it is a mistake, rather than making excuses. Thanks for your rapid reply which has been very helpful even if it doesn't solve the problem!

A further update to Firefox solved this problem for a while, but the latest update but one, has again broken my twitter login and today's update to 103.01 (64 bit) has not fixed it. Firefox is set to clear all my data on closing (all boxes are ticked to be cleared). If I open Firefox and try and open the Twitter login page I get an error page, https://twitter.com/i/flow/login?failedScript=polyfills which says "Something went wrong but don't fret-let's give it another shot" with a button "Try again".

"Try again" just loads the same page, until I go to History - Clear Recent History (time range - everything) - then the Twitter login page loads properly. My Settings for Clearing History, are that ALL the boxes are ticked to clear when Firefox closes. The box to "clear history when Firefox closes" is ticked, and stays ticked. The box to "Delete cookies and site data when Firefox is closed" is ticked and stays ticked. Otherwise the problem appears identical to the one I had at the beginning of July above, and has the same workaround. The latest firefox update seems to have triggered it.

There have been changes to how "Delete cookies and site data when Firefox is closed" and "Clear history when Firefox closes" work regarding cookies.

You can use these steps to make a website recognize and remember you.

  • create a cookie allow exception with the proper protocol (https:// or http://) to make a website remember you

You can check that you aren't clearing important cookies.

  • using "Delete cookies and site data when Firefox is closed" to clear cookies keeps cookies with an allow exception
    in 102+ version toggling this setting makes changes to the "Clear history when Firefox closes" settings and those settings prevail
  • using "Clear history when Firefox closes" in Firefox 102+ honors exceptions and keeps cookies with an allow exception, previous versions removed all cookies

Make sure you keep the "Site settings".

  • clearing "Site settings" clears exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, and software installation and exceptions for passwords and other website specific data
  • Settings -> Privacy & Security
    Cookies and Site Data: "Manage Exceptions"
  • Settings -> Privacy & Security
    Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history":
    [X] "Clear history when Firefox closes" -> Settings
