Recently I have noticed that my Firefox browsing keeps disappearing.

In my settings, I have configured Firefox to "Remember history" (see attached screen shot).

The history for my other browsers, e.g., Chrome are *not* disappearing, only for Firefox.

I have seen solution references to index.dat files, but I have found no *relevant* index.dat files on my computer's disk drives.

What steps can I carry out to retain my Firefox history?

Thank you

Firefox stores bookmarks and history in places.sqlite in the Firefox profile folder.

In case you use "Clear history when Firefox closes" or otherwise clear history.

  • do not clear the "Browsing history"

See also the settings for "Clear history when Firefox closes".

  • using "Clear history when Firefox closes" in Firefox 102+ honors exceptions and keeps cookies with an allow exception, previous versions removed all cookies
  • clearing "Site settings" clears exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, and software installation and exceptions for passwords and other website specific data
