On my MacBookAir, this happened to me a few days ago. Working fine then BAM - pdf files would not open in Firefox. I went in to Firefox-> Preferences -> AddIns and saw it was set to use an Adobe Plugin NPAPI. I disabled this, then went to Preferences -> Applications and set the Preview application to Adobe Reader. That fixed it fore me.
