my hard disk crashed. I managed to copy the profile folder into a memory stick but it contains only 1 file urlclassifier3.sqlite of size of 31548 KB. It does not have history, cookies, or temporary web pages or files(I clear them before closing) .when I place the folder containing this file firefox shows an error saying "Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system." showing that the profile has the lock file". Can someone tell me how to recover the file.

That is the wrong "Profile" folder. There two locations for the "Profile" folder; one is under \App Data\Mozilla\Firefox\ which is where the actual Profile is stored and the one you found which is under \Local Settings\App Data\Mozilla\Firefox\ .
