The tool bar in in download mode and doesnt seem to change, it has been like this for several days and none of my normal quick load pages is on there, could this be why I keep getting shut down and have to re open Firefox?

Bob,

This message about "downloading latest applications" is from the MSN Toolbar / Bing Bar. You would have to contact Microsoft about this - you aren't the only person seeing this issue.

You can disable this toolbar in Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions. See Uninstalling Extensions

If you are experiencing a crash please post a new thread with the details.
