Firefox tells me to update my Adobe Flash, but it won't let me install, even when I follow the special Firefox instructions on Adobe's website.

When I get to the Thank You page, Firefox has a bar at the top that says "Additional plugins are required to display all the media on this page" but when I click to install it, Firefox says that it is in a format that it cannot recognize. The name of the plugin is "gp.xpi".

You can ignore those instructions. Adobe has what I believe is an easier way to install Flash by using the manual installers. See the Adobe troubleshooting guide - http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/191/tn_19166.html#main_ManualInstaller
