login problem at an arts forum... login works at other sites. I can't log in. They gave me a new password and were able to log in with it, doesn't work for me. They suggested clearing cache. I removed a cookie from that site, and tried to clear the cache, but suspect I was unsuccessful. When I go to the login, after attempting to clear the cache and removing cookie, the login form is immediately filled in with a password, which could be the old one or the new one, they are unfortunately the same number of letters. How do I get the cache clear if the edit preferences thing is not working?

You could find and look at the cache files & folders themselves, or rely on the fact that it seems to work. If you really want a lot of detail about all the cached objects use "about:cache" type it into the location bar without the quotes but with the colon ":"

Something like Firebug would also help you figure out what is happening, it will show what loads from cache.

You should also clear the cookies from that website.

  • "Remove the Cookies" from sites that cause problems: Edit > Preferences > Privacy > Cookies: "Show Cookies"

Do you see the new password in the Password Manager?

If more than one password is present then make sure that you remove entries with that wrong password and also entries with an empty user name if any are present.

Thanks for the information, folks.... I did get some interesting information. Tried everything. Unfortunately, I still can't log in... o well...

If your problem is that you are unable to sign in, what happens if you sign in manually, enter the login name and password manually ?

You do say it is only one site you have problems with,

  • is the site faulty?
  • have you ever managed to register and login at that particular site ?

It does not work when I log in manually. I wouldn't be surprised if the site was faulty. Also, the site seemed to be associated with a couple of arts domains that had planted cookies.... maybe there is another I didn't find.

As a quick test for cookie or cache problems you can try to switch Private Browsing mode on to see if that allows to log in.

You can either use Tools > Start Private Browsing or set a check mark in:

  • Tools > Options > Privacy: [ ] "Automatically start Firefox in a private browsing session"

To see all the History and Cookie settings, select: Tools > Options > Privacy > History: Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history"

Do not forget to exit Private Browsing mode after you have finished the login test.

Thanks for the information... tried it and still couldn't log in.

Just in case you aren't aware: on Linux Tools > Options > Privacy > History should be Edit > Preferences > Privacy > History
Sorry for the confusion.

If you still have problems to log in while in Private Browsing mode then maybe try a new profile to see if that works.
