If I close firefox by clicking the red X in top right corner, the browser will not restart unless I reboot the machine. This is frustrating. Is there a proper way to close the browser?

I upgraded to Firefox 4.0 and still have the same issue. Itried un-installing and re-installing the program but it still won't let me close it then re-open it without having to reboot/restart the computer. I get a pop-up box with this error - "Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system." What processes are for Firefox? Which ones to I have to kill in the task manager in order to re-open firefox?
