OK - firefox has UNDONE several years of trust, confidence, and GOODWILL with the OBVIOUS premature issuance of FF 4. After today's experience - - I may be through with FF if I don't get some form of reasonable response.

You can get Firef0x 3.6.16 from here:

Can I simply download/install 3.6.16 over 4 without error or complication? Other posters/users seem to have lost some files or functionality in doing so?

Also, any idea why version 4 was released with so many obvious issues and/or why rudimentary testing didn't identify them prior to a public release?

Sorry you had so many problems with 4.0. I have been using it since the beta2 stage and have found 4.0 to be one of the best versions Mozilla has ever come up with, relatively few problems that couldn't be easily resolved.

Don't doubt you - but that's amazing to me.

My experience for the last 5-6 hours is one of the worst I've ever had with with a public release of any software, including any open source software...didn't notice any installation problems during the INSTALL but it's been downhill since then...not really confident I can get back to a working version of 3.6.16 after seeing everything I've seen this evening...

My confidence in the product is truly shaken...
