Why has my F-Fox stopped showing the contents of bookmarks directories?

After using Firefox for a couple of years, I've found in the last week or so that it will no longer display the contents of some (not all) directories in my bookmarks. It is possible to access them by clicking on "Display all bookmarks", but this is not the way the program has worked before -- or, IMO, should work.

This can be caused by a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.
