I am using Firefox 4 on Windows XP. All other browsers I have tried do work and other search engines in other languages also work. The google search add-on at the top of my browser also works.

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

Your above posted system details show multiple Java Console extensions. You can uninstall and remove Java Console extensions, you do not need them to run Java applets.
