Downloaded files are displayed in "downloads" window but become inaccessible after closure of the session and restarting.
I download files and they are displayed in the "downloads window" and are accessible by double clicking, DURING THE SESSION only. Once I close the session and restart, these files become inaccessible by double clicking. I am using Firefox 4. OS is Win 7 Home premium.

Not saving History (Tools -> options -> Privacy)
"Download History" is one of the items you can choose to remove at the end of your session or if you use the Tools>clear history without a clear understanding of what that does. Remove the check-mark from the clear "download history"
Also make sure "Remember Download history" is check-marked.
All the options mentioned by you are checked and there is nothing by which the downloaded items to get deactivated after the session. But still downloads window items are active only during the session. The items continue to appear but do not open on clicking. I am using Firefox 5. Pl help. Thanks

Make sure that cleanup or anti-virus software isn't removing the files from the download location.
You can check if they are still there or you can try to set another download location to see if that helps.
- Tools > Options > General : Downloads : "Save Files to"
- Tools > Options > General : Downloads : "Always ask me where to save every file"
Press F10 or tap the Alt key to bring up the "Menu Bar" temporarily.
Thank you.The antivirus used by me is Microsoft Security Essentials and I do not find anything in its settings that can deactivate a downloaded file after end of the session. I also tried choosing a new location for "save files to". But nothing is saved in the new location as well. The files continue to be saved to Downloads window only and the files become inactive when you start a new session. Does it look like a problem that can be solved? Pl advise me.
There are several clean-up utilities that will remove files from temporary folders, check to see what folder(s) are your downloads going into. If they are going into your cache folder and you clear cache at the end of the session that would do it. Bring up about:config and search/filter on browser.download and look at the entries with "Dir" in the variable names. You can see where you are storing cache easier using about:cache and compare folder names.

Thank you friend. Let me submit that I am a lay user -- non-tech, that is. Hence I need more step-by-step guidance please. How to check where my downloads are going into? I do not clear cache at the end of the session and Mozilla options also have no such option to clear the cache. When I enter search term "about:config", a warning message comes that system could be de-stabilised. Hence I did not proceed. I was able to see the cache entries in "about:cache" but do not know what to look for and what should I do after locating what I should. Thanks in advance.
