Why is Firefox so slow, and why am I getting a "not reponding" response so frequently?

In the last two or three weeks I am finding that Firefox has become very slow, slow to load, frequently getting a "not responding" note at the top. Also sometimes when I turn on the machine I am asked if I want to "restore previous session" when I closed all the windows before turning off the machine. It is becoming so frustrating that I am contemplating switching to Explorer.

my anti virus plug-ins were my problem, the browser would stall, then load. I disabled my Kaspersky pop-up blocker and some others, and then my browser went lightning fast. I would suggest disabling add-ons and see if the browser returns to normal, then slowly add back.
