Since two days ago, firefox, my browser of choice is unable to connect. i tried the website solutions to no avail.

it may be that is blocked via the firewall somehow -- how do i check that and undo?

This is what i get:

Unable to connect

Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at www.google.com.

   * The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few
         moments.
   * If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
         connection.
   * If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.

Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.
