Since Firefox automatically upgraded (?) last week, I now get an opaque screen appearing when I opening the browser.

It appears for 2~3 seconds then disappears; it is similar to the opaqueness of the background setting, but did not previously come up during start-up.

I need to be sure this is not associated with an outside program or security breach.

That usually means that Windows notices that the program isn't responding.

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
