It is possible that your anti-virus software is corrupting the downloaded files or otherwise interfering with downloading files by Firefox.

Try to disable the real-time (live) scanning of files in your anti-virus software temporarily to see if that makes downloading work.

See "Disable virus scanning in Firefox preferences - Windows"

It is not my antivirus. I turned it off, downloaded FF 8 and the same thing happened ie it will not stay on my computer after downloading just goes! Thanks for your reply.

I have downloaded and saved with my AV turned on many times before. What use would a AV be if you had to be turned off to download files which could possibly be infected. Might just as not have any antivirus protection. Thanks again.

Sometimes you only disable the user interface of security software, but the firewall or anti-virus services are still running in the background.

Not sure I know how to just turn off the interface. When I did it a message came up telling me the AV was turned off and thus not working. Maybe someone else is having the same problem and possibly will find out the answer.

Thanks for your time. You are the only one who has answered.

Cheers

You're welcome.

You can try a different download folder or the desktop to see if that works.

Hi I have tried a different download folder but with the same problem. I have also tried on a differenct system which is runing XP with has the same type of programs and it works. The main difference with this system, that has the problem is that it is Windows Seven. Although it worked many time before and has now stoped saving the downloads. So Windows Seven will save downloads. If I have changed something on this system then I have not done so on the other (XP) system and I don't know what it is that I have changed. Thanks for reply.

The only reason that I can think of that files disappear after the download has finished is that other software removes the file.

On Windows that is usually anti-virus software that rejects (blocks) files and remove them without informing you.
Such software can be very persistent and parts may still be active if you try to disable it.

I understand your point which I agree is a good point. So I do not wish you to think that I am just dismissing what you are saying. However, my XP system and my Windows Seven system have the same AV, Firewall, adware, spyware etc software. I can still save downloads on XP but Windows Seven systems has stopped. If it were my software, the same setting on both systems should produce the same resuilt. Nevertheless, what I am surprised about is that IF any such software settings are blocking downloads being saved, then the software is not telling me this and that I find concerning. That is to say, I don't know what the software which claims to be helping me, is doing! That should not be. I should KNOWINGLY be in control! Thank you for keeping in communication.
