While I'm browsing (even even while I am not using the computer, but am leaving firefox open) new pages will open as tabs, for strange sites for instance likecircuit.com which I have never heard of. However it is a different website each time this happens.

I have never had this happen before. I believe popups etc were blocked on my settings. I have done a virus can and everything is coming up clear.

So... any suggestions why this is happening?

Do a malware check with some malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.
You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.
